What We Believe
THE BIBLE
We believe in the complete accepted canon of Scriptures as originally given, and that the Scriptures are inspired by God, without error, and are the final and ultimate source of authority for faith, conduct, and doctrine (2 Timothy 3:16, 1 Corinthians 2:13).
THE TRINITY
We believe in one God in three distinct persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19, 2 Corinthians 13:14).
THE FALL OF MAN
We believe in God’s creation of man, the test and the fall of man as recorded in Genesis, and the total spiritual depravity of man and his inability to attain Divine righteousness (Romans 5:12, 18).
THE SON
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to this earth as the Savior of the entire world. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, and is both fully God and fully man (Luke 1:26-35, John 1:4-18, Isaiah 7:14; 9:6).
THE RESURRECTION
We believe that Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross, died for the sins of the world, was buried and rose on the third day, and personally appeared to His disciples (1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Romans 4:25). We believe Jesus ascended into heaven, in His exaltation, and that He will literally come back again a second time for His Church (John 14:2-3, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).
SALVATION
We believe that Jesus is the only way to salvation, and that salvation for sinners is by grace, through faith in the perfect and complete work of the cross that Jesus died on, by which we obtain remission of our sins. Salvation is an act of free will in response to God’s love for mankind and is a free gift of God (Ephesians 2:8-9, Hebrews 9:12, 22, Romans 5:11).
BAPTISM
We believe in the public confession and testimony of our faith through water baptism by immersion – a symbol of the new life found through receiving salvation and a symbol of the cleansing power of the blood of Christ that was shed on the cross. We baptize to fulfill the command of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the name of the eternal Godhead – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19, Acts 2:34-36; 19:1-6).
THE HOLY SPIRIT
We believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a real experience at the time of or coming after salvation, with the Scriptural evidence, specifically, speaking in tongues as the Holy Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:1-4; 8:14-17; 10:44-46, Galatians 3:14-15).
HEALING
We believe in the healing of the body by God’s power in its different aspects as practiced in the Early Church (Acts 4:30, 1 Corinthians 12:9, James 5:14).
COMMUNION
We believe in the act of remembering what Jesus Christ did on the cross for us through the taking of communion (aka the Lord's Supper) on a regular basis. JSBC takes communion monthly (Matthew 26:26-28, 1 Corinthians 11:28-32).
ETERNITY
We believe that the devil is real and also believe in the eternal judgment of the devil and his angels in the lake of fire. We believe that to be with God eternally is Heaven, and to be eternally separated from God is hell (Matthew 25:41, Revelation 20; 14-15). We believe in eternal life for believers (John 3:16; 5:24) and eternal punishment for unbelievers (Mark 9:43-48; 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9; Revelation 20:10-15).
THE CHURCH
We believe that there is one true universal church that is made up of true believers and comprised of many local churches around the world. These churches are under the authority and headed by the Lord Jesus Christ and are organized for ministry, teaching, worship, fellowship, communion, baptism, and the spreading of the Gospel. It is essential to the life of the Church that scriptural patterns of discipline are practiced and that oversight for Church discipline, individual and corporate, is exercised by the leadership of the Church (Acts 15:22, Matthew 16:18; 18:15-20).
