MLK Scholarship Committee
Another vibrant ministry within the church is the Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Scholarship Program. The MLK Scholarship Committee assists church members and those under watch-care in their quest for an undergraduate degree. In addition to financial assistance, the committee also provides educational guidance and spiritual support to JSBC students. The goal is to help them achieve academically and socially at their highest level, and to have church/community awareness and responsibility.
Every year the MLK Scholarship Committee awards scholarships to those who apply and are eligible. Fundraisers, events, and donations, raise the scholarship funds that are disbursed to eligible students annually. Student Testimony: How the MLK Scholarship Changed My Life
The MLK Scholarship was a blessing in so many ways. The phone calls, letters, care packages, prayers, support, and guidance in between classes were all huge in making sure I graduated with my degree. I began college as a first-generation college student. Paying for college, even with a financial aid package, was unknown ground. I didn’t know textbooks could and would cost hundreds of dollars in a single semester. Thankfully, the MLK scholarship was available to ease the financial burden. It wasn’t until my last year of college did text sharing websites like amazon and similar used book sites become accessible. Receiving the scholarship also afforded me the opportunity to register for my classes on time for many semesters.
